Preparing for LASIK surgery starts way before the surgical procedure, and many patients struggle to decide whether to move forward with LASIK.
We have provided some top tips to ensure you know key information before proceeding with the LASIK procedure.
1# Find the right surgeon
The first step for preparing for LASIK is evaluating which surgeon and eye clinic are best for you and your needs. Feeling comfortable with your specialist is important as you will need to ask any questions you have before the procedure and feel confident that they’ll do a good job.
At Oculase, we have a team of highly experienced, approachable surgeons who can answer any questions you may have about the procedure and perform top-quality treatment. We are here to make your experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible.
2# Evaluating the procedure cost
Another vital step is considering the cost of the procedure and planning out your payment. The long-term cost of glasses and contacts and the quality work of the LASIK procedure should be considered when making your decision.
LASIK performed by an experienced, highly rated eye clinic produces long-lasting positive results. At Oculase, we have seen extremely positive results of LASIK, as performed by our expert Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, Mr Tariq Ayoub. At Oculase, LASIK procedures start from £1900 per eye. Find out more about our prices here.
3# Determine whether LASIK is right for you
During your initial consultation, your eye specialist will determine whether you are a good candidate for LASIK. This means your eye health will be evaluated. Your specialist will assess whether you have any conditions that may affect your surgery’s outcomes or cause any complications. These conditions include:
- Eye diseases – particularly those that result in continued deterioration of your vision and thinning of your cornea, such as keratoconus
- Inflammation and infection
- Eye injuries and disorders
- Dry eyes
- Large pupils
- Glaucoma
- Cataracts
Your specialist may also consider your suitability for the procedure if you’re severely nearsighted, have a refracted error, have good vision (as you may not need the procedure), have presbyopia, or participate in contact sports.
If you’re not a candidate for LASIK, we may suggest an alternative surgery, such as PRK, SMILE, implantable contact lens (ICL), or refractive lens exchange.
We will work with you to determine the right treatment option that fits your needs and lifestyle.
4# Maintain good physical and mental health
When deciding to go ahead with LASIK, ensuring that you’re at optimal physical and mental health is essential. Here are some tips to improve your health:
- Educate yourself on the procedure – to avoid anxiety before the surgery, it’s important to educate yourself on the procedure. At Oculase, we have many helpful articles and videos on LASIK to help you prepare for your appointment.
- Maintain a healthy diet and sleep pattern – having a healthy diet and good sleep can help you heal more effectively after surgery. Read our article, ‘Top 14 foods to eat for Healthy Eyesight’, to learn more about maintaining a healthy diet for your eye health.
- Being well-hydrated – it’s crucial you stay well-hydrated before the procedure. LASIK can cause dry eye immediately following surgery. If you are properly hydrated, this can prevent excessive dryness and help speed up the body’s natural healing process.
5# Follow pre-surgery instructions
In preparation for the surgery, your surgeon will provide you with instructions on how to prepare for the procedure. Here are some general guidelines you should follow:
- Avoid applying any makeup, skincare products, creams, or perfumes on the morning of your surgery
- Avoid drinking alcohol, smoking, or taking medication the day before the surgery
- Stop wearing contact lenses a few days or weeks beforehand. Switch to glasses instead
- Arrange transport to take you home after surgery – this is because you will not be able to drive after the procedure and may need assistance getting home
- Wear comfortable clothing – choose items that will be easy to remove after your operation and avoid wearing any items that cause lint. This is so we can maintain the highest levels of sanitation and reduce the risk of contamination in the sterile surgery suite
