Retinal Assessment

What is Retinal Assessment?

The retina is a thin layer of tissue that lines the back of the eye on the inside of the eye. The purpose of the retina is to process the light that the lens has focused on, convert the light into neural signals, and send these signals to the brain so we can see the world around us.

The vitreous is the gel-like substance inside the eye that helps the eye maintain a round shape. There are millions of fine fibres intertwined within it that are attached to the surface of the retina. The vitreous is optically clear. However, with ageing or due to disease, it can develop defects or become cloudy.

Several diseases of the vitreous and retina can affect vision. Common retinal conditions that can be sight-threatening include diabetes, age-related macular degeneration, and retinal tears or detachments.

Common vitreous conditions that can affect vision include vitreous syneresis and vitreous detachment, which can result in floaters and flashing lights.

Book an appointment

As part of your general eye assessment, Mr Ayoub will fully examine your vitreous and retina to rule out any underlying disease and, if required, discuss the treatment options with you.

You may need scans of the retina as part of the assessment.

Treatment options for retinal disease include eye drops, injections into the vitreous, laser or surgery to the retina.
